One bright, sunny day in November, Year 2 donned their wellies and walked across the field for their special bonfire. They wanted to find out which materials burned and which melted as part of their science topic.

Pupils from Year 4 interviewed Y2 about the bonfire as part of their literacy topic – they were writing an article for the class newspaper. Well done to Charlie, their photographer, who took all these pictures.

Y2 children put lots of different items, including a belt, a saw, a plastic milk bottle and a cardboard box into the fire to see if they would melt or burn.

Everyone added something to the bonfire.

Then, with plenty of water and a fire extinguisher or two at hand, Mrs Tugwell lit the fire.

Look at the materials now!

When the fire had gone out and everything was cold, the children looked to see what was left.

Mrs Tugwell said “Y2 thoroughly enjoyed building their bonfire and watching the materials burn. Thank you to all the parents who donated their unwanted items to make a such a success of this scientific activity”.
